Not so fast … Export bar placed on £26.7m Francesco Guardi painting of Venice

It was the star lot at Sotheby’s Old Master Sale July 6, 2011 — a large (approx. four by six and one half feet) view of Venice’s Rialto Bridge by Francesco Guardi, with a large estimate, £15 – £25 million (estimate does not include buyer’s premium).  The final selling price of £26,697,250 (inclusive of buyer’s premium) was also large. The Guardian reports the new owner wants to export the picture.  Right, but arts minister Ed Vaizey has put a temporary export block to provide an opportunity for funds to be raised to keep the Guardi in the UK.  This is not unusual, but that’s still a lot of money to raise. We’ll see what happens …
