Contemporary art orgy, part 2

Here are the top five lots (by estimate) at Sotheby’s sale of Post-War and Contemporary art November 9 in New York, along with five other lots of interest.  The first three lots are being sold by the City of Denver to benefit the Clyfford Still Museum and this move is not without controversy.

LOT 11 CLYFFORD STILL, AMERICAN, 1904 – 1980, 1949-A-NO . 1, signed and dated Clyfford 49; signed and titled 1949-A twice on the reverse, oil on canvas, 93 x 79 in. 236.2 x 200.7 cm. ESTIMATE $25,000,000-35,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $55 million, or $61,682,500 with buyer’s premium.

LOT 12 CLYFFORD STILL, AMERICAN, 1904 – 1980, 1947-Y-NO. 2 signed, dated 1947 and inscribed #2 San Francisco on the reverse, oil on canvas, 69 1/2 x 59 in. 176.5 x 149.9 cm. ESTIMATE $15,000,000-20,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $28 million, or $31,442,500 with buyer’s premium.

LOT 13 CLYFFORD STILL, AMERICAN, 1904 – 1980, PH-1033, signed and dated Clyfford 11-29-76; signed on the reverse, oil on canvas, 93 1/2 x 83 in. 237.5 x 210.8 cm. ESTIMATE $10,000,000-15,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $17.5 million, or $19,682,500 with buyer’s premium.

LOT 16 FRANCIS BACON, BRITISH, 1909 – 1992, THREE STUDIES FOR A SELF-PORTRAIT, titled and dated 1967 on the reverse of the right panel, oil on canvas in three parts, Each panel: 14 x 12 in. 36 x 30 cm. ESTIMATE $15,000,000-20,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $17.5 million, or $19,682,500 with buyer’s premium.

LOT 33 GERHARD RICHTER, GERMAN, B.1932, ABSTRAKTES BILD, signed, dated 1997 and numbered 849-3 on the reverse, oil on canvas, 102 3/8 x 133 7/8 in. 260 x 340 cm. ESTIMATE $9,000,000-12,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $18.5 million, or $20,802,500 with buyer’s premium.

FIVE LOTS OF INTEREST

Lot 7 CADY NOLAND, AMERICAN, B.1956, OOZEWALD silkscreen ink on aluminum plate,  72 x 36 x 7 in. 182.9 x 91.4 x 17.8 cm. Executed in 1989, this work is number one from an edition of four plus one artist’s proof. ESTIMATE $2,000,000-3,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price$5.8 million, or $6,578,500 with buyer’s premium.

 LOT 21 CY TWOMBLY, 1928-2011, VENERE FRANCHETTI, signed, titled and dated 1963, oil paint, lead pencil on canvas, 55 1/8 x 78 3/4 in. 140 x 200 cm. ESTIMATE $1,800,000-2,500,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $1.5 million, or $1,762,500 with buyer’s premium.

 LOT 25 DONALD JUDD, AMERICAN, 1928 – 1994, UNTITLED (DSS 155), red fluorescent Plexiglas and stainless steel, 33 x 68 x 48 in. 84 x 172.7 x 122 cm. Executed in 1968, the form of this object was first used in DSS 128. ESTIMATE $5,000,000-7,000,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $4.1 million, or $4,674,500 with buyer’s premium.

 LOT 62 ANISH KAPOOR, BRITISH, B.1954, UNTITLED, alabaster, 43 x 51 x 14 in. 109.2 x 129.5 x 35.6 cm. Executed in 2010. ESTIMATE $1,200,000-1,800,000. POST SALE UPDATE: Hammer price $1 million, or $1,202,500 with buyer’s premium.

 LOT 70  BRICE MARDEN, AMERICAN, B.1938, STELE DRAWING 9, signed, Kremer ink and Kremer white shellac ink on Rives BFK paper 14 7/8 x 9 in. 42.6 x 22.9 cm. Executed in 2007 – 2008. ESTIMATE $500,000-700,000. POST SALE UPDATE: This lot failed to sell.
