Smuggled treasures at DC’s Dumbarton Oaks?

Turkey recently celebrated the return of a mid 2nd-century AD statue Weary Herakles, which had been in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Now comes word that Turkey’s Antalya Museum is pursuing Washington, DC’s famed Dumbarton Oaks (an institute of Harvard University) for the return of the Sion Treasure.

As reported yesterday in the Hurriyet Daily News (my thanks to Ton Cremers at the Museum Security Network for this tip), the treasure was discovered in 1963 — the main portion is in the Antalya Museum, but part of the find was smuggled out of the country, hence the claim.  We’ll see how this goes …
