We’ll see how much love Christies and the post War/contemporary art field get this Valentine’s Day … the top five (by estimate) at the evening sale in London:

Lot 12 - Francis Bacon (1909-1992) Portrait of Henrietta Moraes titled, inscribed and dated 'Portrait of HENRIETTA MORAES From Photograph by JOHN DEAKIN 1963' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 65 x 56in. (165 x 142cm.) Painted in 1963. Estimate on Request. Hammer price: £19 million, Final price inclusive of buyer's premium: £21,321,250 ($33,666,256).

 

LOT 45 - Mark Rothko (1903-1970) Untitled signed and dated 'MARK ROTHKO 1955' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 69¼ x 61¾in. (175.8 x 157cm.) Painted in 1955. Estimate on Request. This lot was withdrawn.

 

Lot 25 - Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) Abstraktes Bild signed, numbered and dated '811-1 Richter 1994' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 98½ x 78¾in. (250.2 x 200cm.) Painted in 1994. Estimate: £5,000,000 - £7,000,000 ($7,895,000 - $11,053,000). Hammer price: £8.8 million, Final price inclusive of buyer's premium: £9,897,250 ($15,627,759).

Lot 32 - Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955) Agrigente signed 'Staël' (lower left); signed, titled and dated 'Agrigente Août 1953 Staël' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 35 1/8 x 51¼in. (89.2 x 130cm.) Painted in 1953. Estimate: £3,500,000 - £5,000,000 ($5,526,500 - $7,895,000). Hammer price: £4.7 million, Final price inclusive of buyer's premium: £5,305,250 ($8,376,990).

 

Lot 5 - Christopher Wool (b. 1955) Untitled signed, inscribed and dated 'WOOL 1990 W11' (on the reverse) enamel on aluminium 108 x 72in. (274.5 x 182.8cm.) Executed in 1990. Estimate: £2,500,000 - £3,500,000 ($3,947,500 - $5,526,500). Hammer Price: £4.3 million, Final price inclusive of buyer's premium: £4,913,250 ($7,758,022).
