$17 million Fake? Major Art World Scandal?

February 22, 2012
It’s signed “J. Pollock” and cost $17 million … but is it legit?

The New York Times has an excellent article about an art world scandal brewing for the past few years.  It involves putative works by AbEx leaders including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, the venerable and now shuttered Knoedler Gallery and a host of really angry art buyers, among others.  At issue, were paintings owned by a publicity shy collector and sold by Knoedler fake; and, did the collector’s agent and a top Knoedler official know they were fake? Suffice it to say, there are lawsuits everywhere with this one.
