A Magical Must See – Cy Twombly from the Sonnabend Collection

April 16, 2012

Cy Twombly, Untitled, 1975. Collage, graphite, tempera, and colored pencil on paper, 22 x 293⁄4 in. (55.88 x 75.57 cm). Sonnabend Collection, New York © Cy Twombly Foundation.

The immediacy and freshness of Cy Twombly’s art ripples through a new exhibition at Eykyn Maclean Gallery in New York with 11 works from the Sonnabend Collection. The gallery’s press release, courtesy Art Daily, notes: “The show is a rare opportunity to view works from several important stages in the artist’s life, including many which have never before been publicly exhibited.”

Considering Twombly’s art has been extensively exhibited globally at museums and galleries, the opportunity to fill in the gaps with works “never before … publicly exhibited” is always welcome.

Here’s a sampling from “Cy Twombly: Works from the Sonnabend Collection”:

"Untitled," 1960-61, colored pencil and graphite on paper.

"Untitled," 1969, gouache and wax crayon on paper.

"Untitled," 1975, tempera, pencil and pastel on paper.

"Sperlonga Drawing," 1959, tempera, pencil and pastel on paper.
