Who painted this painting? LACMA wants to know

May 29, 2012

Europe, First Half of the XVIIIth Century
The Five Senses (?)
Oil on Canvas – 205 x 145 cm
Los Angeles, County Museum of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art as recently acquired this unusual painting. The author and even the subject are unknown.  According to the Art Tribune, LACMA purchased the painting from Etienne Bréton’s (SHAC) in Paris, and it is said to be 18th century Spanish.  However, there is much debate even about the county of origin, as Spanish painting scholars think it might be Italian or even German (see le connoisseur’s Facebook page for more). Hazard a guess?
